The South Island of New Zealand is full of these flowers, called Lupin flowers or Lupinus—or specifically in NZ, the Russell Lupin. They cover huge areas by roadsides and lakes and in pastoral regions, and they look SO PRETTY but they’re actually a pest. Their seeds were smuggled in from the Americas, and it’s suggested that bus drivers of tour groups deliberately planted them to make roadsides look pretty in “drab” areas. They’re considered an invasive species—their heads aren’t petals, but seed pods, so they spread quickly and threaten indigenous species.
